MY MOTHER

Good afternoon, my name is Alana Del Mar Gómez, I’m 15 years old and I’m in 10th grade. For my personal narrative assignment sheet, I interviewed my mother, Luz Eileen González. I chose her because apart from being one of my biggest inspirations in life, she is the most interesting person that I know. I aspire to be as independent, mature, strong, healthy and happy as she is. She might be my mother but she is also my best friend. She has a very interesting story, it is here where it gets told.

Luz Eileen is not a common name and that’s what her parents loved about it: the contrast between english and spanish. Her father, John Edwin González, was 18 and her mother, Luz Delia Melendez, was 16 when they found out they were going to be parents. She was born on September 11th of the 1969 at Río Piedras. A little after she was born, her parents got separated so she didn’t have any other siblings. During her early years of life, her grandmother, Ada Vilches, raised her. She had a fun childhood living in the mountains. She rode the bus to school with her best friends every day and loved her little town. School was a lot different from how it is nowadays but she loved it back then more than how it is now. She didn’t get married until she was 23 years old at a catholic church to a man called Anthony Rullán but got divorced at 28. She has struggled with different types of allergies throughout the years of her lives. It is very probable that those allergies are hereditary.

Luz’s grand parents had a completely different education than hers. They used to tell her stories about how many times they had to go to school without shoes. They usually didn’t have more than 3 notebooks or free lunch. They actually had to go to the forest to look for fruits to have for lunch. She only met one of her grand grandmothers, her name was Justina Rivera whom dedicated her life to her children and became a housekeeper. Other than that, her grandfather was a marine, and he was always sailing across the sea.

I personally think that my generation is very lucky. Luz was talking to me about how they didn’t have computers, or cellphones. She says that life was a lot more easier back then than now. She thinks that it is like that because things were a certain way, and now we have so many opportunities and chances to live a “successful” life, that we usually get satisfied with whatever we get, instead of fighting for our dreams for real. She says that the biggest problem that has happened to the society is the invention of cellphones. Even though they make things easier, they are addictive. People co-depend on their cellphones, so much that they have a better internet life than their real one.

A memory that impressed her about her son, Giuliano when he was 3 years old, he escaped to the forest and got lost. Also, something that impressed her about Alana at 5 years old was when she told her that she was going to sing at a singing festival. Something unusual about Giuliano was how he couldn’t fall asleep without holding somebody’s ear. Luz lived in different places throughout her life. She grew up in Palomas, Comerío. When she turned 18 she moved to a hostel with a few roommates in Río Piedras to study at UPR. At 20, she moved to Levittown with her biological mother. At 23 moved to an apartment with her husband and at 28 got divorced. She went to live in her uncles, Omar, house. At 29, she found out she was pregnant so she moved back to the place where she was raised with our father, José Gómez, because she thought there was no better place to be raised at.

As a kid she wanted to be a teacher. Her first job was at JCPenney, selling perfumes. She studied theatre and education and became a theatre teacher. She has traveled a big amount of times to USA, and a few times to the Antilles and Dominican Republic. Her favorite trip was one where both of her children and our father went to New York, rented a car and drove all the way down to Florida.

The person who has influenced her the most is her grandmother, Ada, because she was an independent woman. The two people in her life who changed her to be a better version of herself were her daughter and son because they inspired her to be the best mother she could be. An advice that stuck with her and will always be her guide was an advice her biological mother told her. She said that people were expecting her to end up having a crazy life like her father’s, and that she should never settle for anything less than being the best version of herself.

Luz Eileen González is a role model not only to me, but to any person that gets to meet her. I have friends that admire my relationship with her and the way she thinks. A lot of people look out of her because she is a very open minded, independent, strong, happy, beautiful mother and woman. She has learned a lot from being a mother and a teacher. She raised my brother and I pretty much alone. Trust me, being a single mother can be hard, but she makes it looks so easy with her optimistic mind. I aspire to be like her.

ENGLISH

ENGLISH IS THE PASSPORT THAT LEADS TOWARDS SUCCESSFUL CAREER GOALS

Question: How do you think that learning english benefits the future of our Puerto Rican students?
There are so many benefits, specially when those kids have big dreams.
English is one of the most famous languages around the world. There are about 67 countries that use english as their first language.
English is our second language here in Puerto Rico, but even though students have to take english class throughout their whole school life, most of them only learn the basics and don’t learn how to speak this language fluently. We need to find a way to motivate our students to learn more about this language, simply because english is the passport that leads towards successful career goals. It’s something like this: Let’s say you find yourself at the airport: you are in a rush because your flight will leave in 20 minutes and you just got there. You go running to look for your ticket, you do the line, you look around at the people saying goodbye to their families, you get distracted and then when you get to the lady with the blue uniform you realize that you didn’t bring your passport with you. This is the moment when you realize that you literally lost your flight. Well, life is sort of like that. You can have the most amazing opportunity in front of your eyes and if you leave what makes you stand out at home: you lose the chance. As Frank Smith once said: “One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.” So let’s say I have an interview for a job in The Hotel of La Concha at San Juan. I start off the interview well, I answer all of the questions, I show a positive energy and i’m good. Then there comes this other guy after my interview, and he’s about to have interview too: but i notice that he talks both in Spanish and English. I go back home and wait for a call back from the hotel, but i don’t get one. I guess they stayed with the bilingual guy since he seemed very professional and also could communicate with the tourists who came to visit the hotel. Being bilingual definitely makes you more attractive when you’re looking for a job.
I’ve always been passionate about different cultures, places but mostly, languages. When I started learning to speak, read and write english my main goal was to be able to present my ideas to an audience. To write a book, to do slam poems and give speeches about certain themes. At the beginning it was sort of difficult but as i kept practicing and reading and speaking to myself alone, I got more and more used to it.
Let’s talk about the benefits:
  1. The ability to communicate with people from different cultures and countries. Nelson Mandela has a quote that goes by: “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head, but if you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart."
  2. Learning english gives you bigger possibilities to study in different colleges from PR and it opens doors of opportunities wherever you want to go around the world.  “ The limits of my language are the limits of my world.” - Ludwig Wittgenstein said that and he couldn't be more right.
  3. Helps maintain the brain flexible and agile. Prevents deterioration of the brain functioning over time: Alzheimer, dementia, etc.  (This is probably one of the reasons why my grand grandmother has never had problems with her mental health. She reads english and Spanish books all the time and speaks both languages. She is now 89 years old and looks so healthy. )
  4. It gives you confidence to travel and be independent.
  5. Makes you grow as an individual, and it also helps when you’re looking for a job.

There are tons of benefits for learning english, this ones are just the basic ones.
I personally believe that ever since I learned english, i’ve become more confident with myself and my opinions. I’ve learned how to stand up for the things that I believe in and the themes that i’m passionate about. For a fifteen year old teenage, Puerto Rican girl, I consider myself empowering because learning english was not a barrier for me, instead, it was a bridge that got me to the path that i want to follow. Tell me, shouldn't every student have that opportunity?

iPhone vs. Android

You only see what you want to see.

I did it all, dear. I took every moment to forget, forgive and keep living... But you're knocking on hell's door, standing on its doorstep without being aware of it. You see, I will make you fall in love with me and you will give your all to me as long as i stay by your side. But little do you know, i'm a nomad and i did not come to stay. All i've got are intentions to leave. You will memorize every freckle of my body and when i'm gone you will start looking for them in somebody elses skin. So, listen carefully when i tell you that i'm not a trustworthy girl. I'm satan's daughter dressed in white. In your mind I will be what you'd like me to be, but when you get to know me, you'll see how you're playing with fire and it will be inevitable to burn. Please leave before it too late... And don't you play with beautiful demons and then ask why you're locked out of heaven.

Entonces, quién soy yo?

El aire me odia sin saber que soy yo quien le ha robado el sol... Me llamo la noche, & la luna algún día encontrará en mi la paz mayor....

Just a few words

Nonchalance, nonchalance. Thats what you're full of. Little does the world know that here i am, sitting on the edge of my bed. I shed the tears you never cried when you were 10 because you were too busy calming you little brothers cry. I whisper the words you never said to your parents because they were always too busy taking care of what didnt matter. In the car, I smoke in the taste of fresh air that you didn't breathe in when you were 13 because your parents only let you slide down the windows when the smell of cigarrettes wasn't that bad. The pain you give to me is the one your parents gave you: the kind of pain that burns deep inside your skin and it goes through your bones and it hurts, it hurts, it hurts. From a man who has lived so much, I would have expected a wiser soul, but i guess you still carry the burden and you let everybody around you burn when you let out the flames. I don't want to think you don't care about me, because i know you do... but please, stop comparing my pain to yours, after all... Pain is pain, no matter which one hurts the most.

SAD

i find it sad.
sad that i was so close to love you,
yet so far…
sad that i really wanted you
and you let me go…
sad that you let me fall…
but didn’t catch…
